spring quarter

Today is my first day of Spring quarter at PSU. My schedule for school this year is nice because I only have one late night – Mondays. I end at 6:30 and will be home (if traffic goes smoothly) just after 7:30pm. Tuesdays and Thursdays I’m done with school at 2pm, which should be early enough to beat rush hour traffic and make it home around 3pm. Plenty of time for homework. I am only taking 3 classes this quarter instead of 4, but they are all major related classes. I am taking Phonetics & Acoustics, Anatomy & Physiology, and Speech & Language Development in Children. I am ready to get this quarter started, but I am really excited about starting my new position at LCC. I went in today to fill out the necessary paperwork and while introducing myself, a man came out of his office and told me that he wanted to talk to me about teaching a PE dance class in the future. Sounds like this job could grow for me. I like it when things feel like they are falling into place. It lets me calm my nerves and relax.

taking the good with the bad

This week has been full of emotions for me. I will get the bad news out of the way. My dear Jango Fett has an aggressive form of cancer that has taken up most of her abdominal organs and is getting worse. We took her to the vet because she was losing weight and we were worried. Now we know why, and it’s not what we were expecting. After lots of tears, long talks, and speaking with the vet, we decided it would be best to put our baby girl down instead of watching her waste away. The doctor only gave her two months tops and we just don’t want her to be in any pain or discomfort. We take her in Friday to have her sleep for eternity and be in pain no more.

Now for the good news. I ended up with a GPA of 3.82 for Winter Quarter. 2 A’s and 2 A-’s. Considering how busy I was and how many late nights I had, I am quite thrilled. I can hardly believe I start Spring Quarter in just a few days.

Work is allowing me to go down to 20 hours a week so I can be more flexible with my school schedule. We were worried that I might possibly lose my job altogether, but thankfully they worked with me. The last piece of good news is that I got another job. Sounds crazy, BUT it’s only 2 hours a week. I am the new dance teacher/choreographer for the Lower Columbia College Show Choir. I start Wednesday and I am so excited. It’s going to be a lot of fun and I can’t wait to start!

it’s been way too long

This quarter has been crazy. I realize I haven’t done any updates since this quarter started so here it goes:

I am taking 4 classes and 15 credits. A full load is 12 credits, I think I should have stuck to that. I am taking 2 classes that go toward my major (Neurology/Voice & Diction) and two classes that go to my dance minor (Movement for the Actor/Contemporary Dance in the 20th Century). Neurology is a TON of information and it’s A LOT of work and studying, but I have an amazing teacher and I’m doing well in the class. I am getting 93% at the moment (I believe). Voice & Diction is easy because it’s a lot of presentations where you have to adjust your voice in specific ways and learn basically about how we speak. The teacher though is horrible. She lectures verbatim from her notes and never expands on anything so a lot of the information doesn’t stick with me. Then she gives us tests where she tells us that we don’t need to know certain items because they won’t be on the test, but then she puts them on the test. Frustrating! My Movement for the Actor class is fun. We do some tumbling and it’s all about becoming free and trusting yourself. It’s a good class and the teacher talks a bit like William Shatner at times so I find it funny. My Contemporary Dance class is an online class. No actual dancing, it’s more about the history of modern dance. It also is a cluster studies class so it satisfies two areas of my degree for me (credits for my popular cultures cluster studies and my minor in dance). It is more work than all of my other classes. We have a group project in which I am doing 95% of the work because everyone else is apparently an idiot, and I am ready for it to be over. I am learning some good information, but for the type of class it is, it’s a ridiculous amount of work. Maybe it only feels that way because of this group project in which I am doing the majority of it.

A few friends and I started an unofficial dance club this term. We meet twice a week in the dance room and spend an hour doing whatever we want. We choreograph, help others with choreography, teach others, etc. It’s been a really nice thing to do since I don’t have an actual dance class this term. I’ve missed dancing so this is sort of my outlet that I have. Some days we end up not dancing and instead just talk and be a support system for each other, it’s actually quite nice, but mostly we dance!

All in all it’s been go go go for me. I was sick last week with a horrible sore throat. It was the worst one I’ve had in years. I am in the process of getting over it still, but all I do now is cough occasionally and sneeze every now and then. I can handle that. I haven’t had much time for a personal life, although I’ve had to squeeze in events here and there where my presence was required. I had one girls night, but it was only a couple hours long (but it was a great night). One Saturday night I played Texas Hold ‘Em and won! It was my first time winning that game so that was nice, and I won a bit of money. I got to see a movie with my Aunt and mom which was fun. This weekend will be the end of week 8 at school and that means only 2 weeks left before finals. I am so ready for spring break. I feel like I don’t get a chance to see or talk to people I should be seeing and talking to. Did I mention I’m still working? I really don’t know how I am still in one piece.

Next quarter I am only taking 3 classes 12 credits and they are all classes for my major. The classes are: Phonetics & Acoustics, Anatomy & Physiology, and Speech & Language Development in Children. Should be hard and fun, but it’s only 3 classes. I will be back on campus 3 days a week instead of 2 days like this quarter, but I will be ending early two of those days. I can handle only 1 late night a week. Still taking it one day at a time. Hopefully I can update again sooner than later.

2012

It’s a new year and so far it’s started off well. I spent the last few days in Bend, OR which was nice. Chris wasn’t feeling well so we didn’t do as much as we wanted to. It was still nice to go there again. While we were away my mother-in-law fed our cats and also surprised us by cleaning our downstairs floors. It was great, if there’s ever a cleaning fairy it’s definitely her. Today I visited my grandpa because he turned 91 today. He’s a great man and isn’t doing so well, of course I can’t imagine doing fantastic at 91. I go to work Wednesday and start school next week. It’s back to the grind soon and I had a great couple weeks off.

four point oh

Grades came in today and I received straight A’s. I’m quite thrilled. It was a great quarter at PSU. Next quarter will be tougher though. I will be taking 15 credits instead of 10 and one of those classes is neurology. The only thing exciting about that class is I’ve heard the professor is amazing! In a weird way I look forward to it.

I only have 4 1/2 days of work left before Winter break. As a celebration to my good grades and break coming up, I decided to get a start on my holiday baking. Coconut macaroons are done and my oreo truffles have just been placed in the freezer to harden before I coat them in chocolate. This weekend I plan to make my rum balls as well as sugar cookies. I have many Christmas cookie cutters for the sugar cookies as well as a couple Star Wars cookie cutters that I will be using as well!

With Christmas comes New Years, and Chris and I will be heading to Bend, OR once again. A band that we enjoy (Larry and his Flask) will be playing New Years Eve in Bend and we look forward to seeing them live. I personally look forward to the plethora of snow that Bend has to offer in the Winter. Last time we went to Bend in the Winter Chris was sick the entire trip. This time we will be crossing our fingers for good health so we can enjoy our trip.

Until next time, I leave you with my macaroons…

done

I am officially done with my first quarter at PSU. It was a great first quarter and I look forward to next quarter, but for now I am going to enjoy a little over a month off. Tonight I am going to celebrate by having a game night with some friends who live close by. Good times, good games, gin and tonics, it will be a good evening!

same old

I’ve been quite busy with the end of my first quarter at PSU coming up. It’s been a great quarter. Things have been quite stressful in my life lately with my nana and grandpa both being in the hospital. I am very thankful that both of them were out for Thanksgiving. Although my grandpa was unable to join us for Thanksgiving, I’m just glad that he’s closer to home and in a care facility instead of a hospital. Instead of thinking of all the stress and crazy aspects of life, I thought I would share a funny aspect of my life from when I was younger:

You know the Alaska Airlines planes with the picture of the Eskimo on the back? I remember being a little kid waiting for my mom to return on a flight from some dance judging adventure (back when you could actually wait at the gate for your loved ones) and seeing all of the planes. I remember being curious as to why a picture of Ronald Reagan was on all of the Alaska planes. It wasn’t until I was about 12 or 13 that I realized it was just an Eskimo and not Ronald Reagan. Maybe it was because he was president at the time that I thought it was him on the planes. I’m really not sure. I just find it interesting the way the mind of a child works. Even if it was my own mind.

1 day

I just want 1 day. A day at home where I have absolutely nothing going on. No work, no school, no homework. Zero obligations, zero worries. No one breathing down my neck to do something when I already have A, B, and C going on. No pre-made plans for the day. Just quiet time at home with my husband and my kitties. I might even do some house work or grocery shopping (I can’t remember the last time I was caught up on either). It may sound lame and boring, but to me, at this moment in time, sounds like the perfect day. I have 2 weeks left of this quarter and none of my classes will be having a final. I am ready for some time off.

all signed up

Life has been extremely busy and stressful lately. My Nana was in the hospital again with what we thought was pneumonia and a tumor. Turns out it wasn’t either and she’s finally home and attempting to get well. My grandpa is in the hospital currently and does have pneumonia and is currently sedated. I have had a ton of homework with no time to get it done. There have been 3 birthdays all within the time span of 1 week, so getting that done has been time filling as well. I am all signed up for next quarter classes now and got into all of the classes that I wanted to. I will be taking 4 classes and 15 credits next quarter. My hardest class will probably be my neurology class, but I’m looking forward to it. I am also looking forward to only driving to Portland 2 days a week instead of 4. I have 3 weeks left of this quarter and I will be done. This really makes me happy. My classes are fairly easy, but time and stress has been a big factor lately and I’m ready for it to be over. I will say that even though I’ve been stressed, I’ve had friends to spend time with and they’ve kept me relatively sane and happy. Until next time…

clearing up confusion

A while back I had mentioned the idea of using my tuition reimbursement money for getting a commuter car. Instead I used the money to pay off my Forester. I am using that vehicle to commute to school and it’s the one that I scratched and put a dent in last Thursday. It sucks, looks ugly, but it’s running great. Yesterday Mark and Merle came over and installed all new belts, among many other things. The car is purring like a kitten and should last me through the end of school until I have a job that will afford me to buy a different car. Well I am off to do some homework before I shower and fall asleep. It’s only a 4 day work week for me so I am definitely looking forward to that!
